When it is 100°F outside and the asphalt starts to melt, your air conditioner becomes the only one fighting to keep your home cool. But what if it succumbs to the heat itself? How can you protect your air conditioner from damage in extreme heat without summoning Carlson dancing with a fan on the roof? When equipment fails and the sun gets out of control, specialists from Hot Cold Air, an air conditioner repair and maintenance company in Illinois and surrounding areas, know everything about how to keep your air conditioner running:

  • how to protect your air conditioner from overheating;
  • what signs of malfunction should be noticed early;
  • what to do if the equipment is already "tired";
  • and why Hot Cold Air is the one to call in a critical situation.

Our clients know that we are always there for them. When equipment fails and the sun gets out of control, we do not just fix malfunctions—we prevent them.

Causes of Air Conditioner Breakdowns

Air conditioner breakdowns in extreme temperatures are most often caused by a number of very objective reasons, provoked by the absence of regular technical maintenance.

Let us consider what the main causes of air conditioner breakdowns lie in wait for you during extreme heat and why they are so dangerous.

Compressor Overheating

  • The compressor is the heart of the air conditioner. When the heat is off the charts, it starts working without a break. Without sufficient cooling or maintenance, the compressor can overheat, leading to its failure. And replacing a compressor is not a cheap pleasure.

Dirty or Clogged Filters

  • A filter is like a person's nose. If it is clogged, "stuffiness" begins. In our case, it is harder for the system to push air, efficiency drops, and the load increases. And if the filter has not been changed since "your birth," be prepared for surprises.

Lack of Refrigerant (Freon)

  • Without freon, an air conditioner is just a noisy fan. Refrigerant leakage is a common problem, especially in older systems. In the heat, it quickly makes itself known: the air conditioner stops cooling, and the compressor suffers from overload.

Clogged Outdoor Unit

  • Imagine you have to cool the air while being in a dusty, overgrown, grassy cubicle exposed to the scorching sun. This is how the outdoor unit of an air conditioner feels if it is not cleaned. A clogged heat exchanger cannot effectively dissipate heat—and there you have it, overheating again.

Voltage Fluctuations

  • Heat is most often what provokes increased electricity consumption—fans, air conditioners, refrigerators, microwaves, and other equipment are turned on. As a result, voltage fluctuations are possible, which "hit" the air conditioner's electronics.

Component Wear

  • If your air conditioner is more than five years old and has not seen preventive maintenance since winter, do not be surprised by breakdowns. Bearings, belts, contactors—all of these have a service life and require maintenance.

Problems do not arise out of nowhere—they grow like a snowball. That is why regular air conditioner maintenance is not a luxury, but a necessity.

First Signs of Malfunction: What to Look Out For

To avoid being suddenly left alone with the heat, pay attention to the following signs indicating that your air conditioner is "on the verge".

  • The airflow has become weak and warm.
  • Unusual noises have appeared (humming, gurgling, squeaking).
  • Moisture or water leakage from the indoor unit.
  • Frequent turning on/off (short cycling).
  • A sharp increase in electricity consumption.
  • The room temperature is not maintained at the set level.

If you notice even one of these points, it is time to call Hot Cold Air. The sooner a problem is detected, the easier and cheaper it is to solve.

How to Keep Your Home Cool Until Your AC is Repaired

It is a classic situation: the heat is raging outside, your air conditioner suddenly "dies," and you are left alone with scorching hot air. There is no need to panic. What can you do while the technician is on the way to avoid turning into a "fried dish"?

  1. Close windows, doors, and curtains – this is your first line of defense. In the sun, glass turns into an oven. Therefore:
  • tightly close all windows and exterior doors;
  • draw dark curtains or blinds, especially on the south side;
  • if you have foil curtains or reflective screens—it is time to get them out;
  • hang a wet sheet near an open window in the shade—evaporation will provide some coolness.
  1. Use fans correctly. Simply turning on a fan is not enough. You need to get the air moving:
  • place a floor fan opposite a window—it will blow hot air outside;
  • create a cross-breeze: a fan at one window to "exhaust," at another to "intake";
  • if you have ceiling fans—switch them to summer mode. In this case, the blades rotate counterclockwise and lift hot air upwards.
  1. Use the improvised mini-air conditioner method:
  • place a bowl of ice or bottles of frozen water in front of a fan—it will blow cool air. Of course, not like a real air conditioner, but when it is 100°F outside, even that coolness will bring relief.
  1. Turn off everything unnecessary. Any equipment is a source of heat. Therefore:
  • turn off unnecessary computers, televisions, and lamps;
  • cook in the microwave instead of the oven, or even better—order something cold;
  • refrain from ironing. Let the linen, not you, look a little wrinkled.
  1. Cool shower and wet rags:
  • take a cool shower, but not an ice-cold one, to avoid shocking your body;
  • wrap yourself in a wet towel or place a cool cloth on your neck and wrists—this will help lower your body temperature.

At night, the temperature drops at least a little. Open windows, turn on fans, ventilate thoroughly, and then close everything again in the morning. Follow these tips, and no heat will be terrible for you.
